Water Safety & Education

Protecting Our Community Through Education and Prevention

At the Jones Beach Lifeguard Association, water safety is more than a priority, it is our mission. As the nonprofit arm supporting the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps, we are committed to promoting beach safety, drowning prevention, and responsible water recreation throughout Long Island.

Whether you are visiting Jones Beach, Robert Moses or any of our amazing New York State Parks for the first time or are a lifelong ocean swimmer, understanding water safety can save lives.

Trained Professional LIfeguards

Swim Near A Lifeguard

The safest place to swim is at a beach or any open body of water or pool is front of trained professional lifeguards.

Lifeguards are trained to identify dangerous conditions, prevent accidents before they happen, and respond immediately in emergencies. Always choose guarded beaches whenever possible and remain within designated swimming areas.

Ocean Swimming

Know the Risks of Ocean Swimming

Rip Currents

Rip currents are fast moving channels of water that pull away from shore and are one of the most common causes of beach rescues and drowning.

If caught in a rip current:

  • Stay calm
  • Do not swim directly against the current
  • Swim parallel to shore until free or flip and float on your back
  • Then swim back toward land at an angle
  • If unable to escape, float and wave for help

Surf & Shore Break

Powerful waves can knock swimmers down, cause injuries, and create dangerous shore break conditions in shallow water. Know before you go. Talk to your local lifeguard and ask questions!

Changing Conditions

Wind, tides, weather, and surf can shift rapidly. Always pay attention to beach warning signs and flags. Make sure you always adhere to the lifeguards instructions.

For Families

Water Safety for Families

Children require constant supervision near water.

  • Keep young children within arm’s reach
  • Designate a distraction-free “Water Watcher”
  • Do NOT be distracted by your cell phone when watching kids in the water
  • Teach children to never enter the water without permission
  • Enroll children in swim lessons early

Boating and Open Water

Boating and Open Water Safety

Water safety extends beyond the shoreline.

  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket
  • Check weather and marine forecasts before departure
  • Carry emergency safety equipment
  • Never boat under the influence
  • Let someone know your float plan before leaving shore

Emergencies

Be Prepared for Emergencies

Knowing how to respond in an emergency can save a life.

In a water emergency:

  1. Alert the nearest lifeguard immediately
  2. Call 911 if lifeguards are unavailable
  3. Do NOT attempt a rescue unless you are properly trained. This often results in multiple drownings.

We encourage all community members to become certified in CPR and first aid.

Ocean Safety

Respect the Ocean

The ocean is powerful, beautiful, and unpredictable.
Respect for the water begins with preparation, awareness, and good judgment.

Swim Smart. Swim Safe. Swim Near A Lifeguard.
