Robert Joseph Frank, Sr. began his lifeguarding career in 2001 at Sunken Meadow State Park, where he served through 2004. In 2005, he transitioned to ocean lifeguarding at Robert Moses Field 2, a move that marked the beginning of nearly a decade of service on one of Long Island’s most dynamic and demanding waterfronts. He remained at Field 2 until 2014 and later served at Robert Moses Field 3, a beach he has long regarded as one of the most exceptional environments he has ever worked.

Throughout his years on the stand, Robert distinguished himself through his work ethic, endurance, and commitment to public safety. On peak summer days, he performed numerous rescues, often responding continuously as surf conditions intensified. His time on the ocean instilled in him the values of teamwork, vigilance, compassion, and perseverance — qualities that continue to guide him in all aspects of his life.

Robert’s instinct for lifesaving began long before joining the New York State Lifeguard Corps. From a young age, he found himself assisting swimmers in distress in both ocean and pool settings, experiences that revealed a natural ability to remain calm under pressure and act decisively. When he learned in 2001 that New York State was recruiting lifeguards, he immediately pursued the opportunity. Despite having no formal competitive swimming background beyond a brief period on a collegiate diving team, his athleticism, discipline, and connection to the water propelled him into a career that would become one of the most meaningful chapters of his life.

Lifeguarding remains the most rewarding work Robert has ever undertaken. The ocean provided him with purpose, direction, and a profound sense of service. The friendships, lessons, and experiences gained during his years on the stand continue to shape him today. Contributing to the Jones Beach Lifeguard Association and supporting the corps in any capacity is, for Robert, both an honor and a privilege.
